Elementary School Counselor Introduction Lesson

A new school year brings another round of School Counselor Intro lessons. Last year, I attempted to combine my meet the counselor lesson with a bullying lesson to save time but it really wasn’t effective.

After trying to kill two birds with one stone, I’ve come to the belief that elementary school counselors should have a separate intro lesson.

Reasons why I didn’t like combining my lessons:

-Too much information in too short of a time period.

-I felt really rushed to cover a lot of information. I know if I am feeling rushed, some of my students will feel overwhelmed as well.

-I want my students to see me as a neutral person in the school: NOT A DISCIPLINARIAN!

-Starting off with a bullying lesson made me seem more like an “enforcer” rather than a “helper”.

-Having a separate intro lesson lends importance to the role of the school counselor. It says, “The school counselor’s role is important!” rather than, “The school counselor can help with bullying.”

-Of course, I want my students to know that I can help with bullying, but we all know that is only one topic (of countless others) that we cover. Even a mini-lesson is powerful in helping students understand our role in the school.

So with my desire to do things a bit differently this year, I have created a short Powerpoint slideshow for my Young-5’s-2nd grade students.

The main thing I want my students to know is that school counselors help kids, so that’s how I start my slideshow (after I tell them my name and role of course!).

I then go into how school counselors help kids when they are feeling upset. The feeling words are animated, which allows me to prompt my students to name the feeling and discuss when kids may feel a certain way.

Elementary Counselor Intro Sadness

Elementary Counselor Intro Feelings

Next, I talk about a few different ways I can help them:

How school counselors help - listen

How school counselors help - solve problems

How school counselors help - making good choices

After that, I go into some of the things I do as a school counselor to help them:

How elementary counselors help

I end my slide show by summing up that school counselors help students do their best:

elementary counselors help kids

To cap off my mini-lesson, I give each student one of my school counseling brochures for them to take home so their families or caretakers can learn about school counselors too!

Since I get a lot of transient students throughout the school year, I made my presentation into a book (using cardstock and the binding machine) so I can share my lesson with my new students as well. You can download a copy of the slideshow here.

So…how do you introduce yourself to your students? I would love to hear about it in the comments below!

Question- How do you introduce yourself to grades 3-5?

    1. Heather Thomas Avatar

Since all of my students (except newbies) know me, I do a conflict resolution lesson where I teach them 12 ways to try to solve their problems.

We go over kid-sized problems versus problems that need help from an adult. We also go over how I help and how other people at the school can help with problems.

I like using the role plays in my problem solving bundle to practice strategies in small group. http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Social-Skills-Problem-Solving-Role-Playing-Bundle-688241
